Register for 4th Annual Twin Cities Social Justice Education Fair by October 9th! You are welcome to register after October 9th or on the day of the fair, but we cannot guarantee food or childcare for you. Please visit our website to register yourself or a group of youth.

You can earn up to 8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Interpretation in Hmong, Spanish, and Somali will also be available. 
 
This year we are also excited to announce our Parents and Families Track:
 
Announcing a meeting for parents and families interested in doing social justice work in education! The Social Justice Education Fair Planning Committee would like to hear from YOU about how to make this year’s Social Justice Education Fair an open, inclusive, and engaging space for parents and families to meet, connect and talk about the change we hope to be in our local schools. 
 
Come and get involved in making change in our schools in the Twin Cities!

We are excited to announce more than 40 workshops on topics ranging from gender and sexuality, race and identity, ethnic studies, union organizing charter schools, youth participatory action research, decolonization, food justice in education, and so much more!

***Stay tuned for a keynote panel announcement about exciting and inspired  local and national speakers who’ll share their  experiences and intersectional insights on the struggle for justice in education.

Come stand with teachers, staff, families, students, community, and the Social Justice Education Movement (SJEM) as we demand that MPS:
1. End MPS’s contract with Reading Horizons
2. Form a diverse, community based assessment entity to review current and future curriculum and partners
3. End scripted curriculum and expensive, short term, test-score centered purchasing
4. Provide funds for teachers, schools, and communities to review and replace marginalizing curriculum and texts in their current libraries with richly diverse and culturally relevant curriculum and literature

Registration is now open! Please visit our website to register yourself or a group of youth. Help us out and do it early so we can be as prepared as possible with food and childcare!
 
Workshop proposal submission deadline is EXTENDED to September 13, 2015 – so get your workshops in, folks! Share your knowledge and expertise or convene a discussion around an important topic toward social justice in education.

Help Fight Racist K-2 Curriculum and School Discipline in MPS

Join educators, students, and community in attending the next MPS School Board Meeting to let MPS know that we will not tolerate, I. racist curricula, or II. racist school discipline practices.

I. Info on racist K-2 curriculum in MPS

During professional development prior to school starting, educators became aware of new, and offensive, racist, K-2 literacy curriculum purchased by MPS from a company called Reading Horizons for $1.2 million. Sign the petition against it. Here is an an example image from the curriculum. Note that Minneapolis recently changed “Columbus Day” to Indigenous People’s Day in response to calls to acknowledge the violent falsity of the widely-told American origin story:

Young Activists Summit planning, Tabling, & More!

Dear students, parents and caregivers, educators, and community members,
 
Young Activists Summit:
Are you a young person (roughly college-aged or younger) or a person who works with young people? Consider attending our upcoming proposal writing workshop and Young Activists Summit brainstorm where you can connect with fair organizers, other youth and youth workers, and help make the Fair an important space for growing a strong network of young activists and scholars!

We are working to ensure that, this year, tablers will have maximum exposure to Fair attendees (to give you an idea, last year we had more than 500 participants). Please fill out this form to request a table for your group or organization. Let us know if you have any special needs, and we’ll try to help!
 
Please don’t forget to submit a workshop – proposals are due on Friday, September 4th!
Interested in getting involved in the fair in other ways too?
We are especially looking for help with interpretation and translation to make the fair an inclusive, accessible space. Please let us know if you can help with interpretation in a commonly spoken language in the Twin Cities (especially Spanish, Somali, and Hmong) or know someone who can.

Upcoming MPS School Board Action, #StudentsNotSuspects:
 
Join the Social Justice Education Movement (SJEM) and the Coalition for Critical Change and come out to the upcoming special school board meeting to demand an end to cops in schools. At this meeting, the school board will determine a proposal for its contract for School Resource Officers (SROs).
 
May 26th, 6:00pm

You can also show up with us to one of three upcoming budget forums to demand that the $500,000 going to SROs be reallocated to support restorative, transformative, and non-punitive programs. Visit the MPS website for date, times, and locations.

Last year’s Fair brought together 500 diverse and inspiring participants including roughly 300 educators and 200 high school students at Benjamin Mays Elementary School in St Paul.
